Medical-Surgical Nursing

Description

This intensive program is designed to provide the registered practical nurse (RPN) with the knowledge and skills required to provide comprehensive care to patients in acute care and clients in long-term care. The program is offered in asynchronous and synchronous delivery of study modules. The theoretical study modules are divided into two courses. The third course of the program will provide students with a supervised clinical experience. Concepts such as patient assessment, critical thinking and analysis, problem solving, ethics, and effective communication are emphasized in the program. In addition, holistic care, system review, general medicine and mental health challenges will be addressed in conjunction with the completion of health assessment course as pre-requisite for this program. Theory-based knowledge and skills will be integrated using case studies, journal reflection, participatory group discussions, video presentation, and current research findings. Upon completion of this certificate, the student will be prepared to take RPN Medical-Surgical Certification with the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA).
