Your Career Path

The Indigenous Classroom Assistant diploma will prepare you for a career in Indigenous schools in northern communities. When you complete the program, you will be qualified to work as a classroom assistant with primary school children, under the professional direction of the classroom teacher and school principal.
 
In partnership with Nipissing University, Oshki-Wenjack’s special blended delivery method allows you to stay in your home community for half of the program (field placements).
 
Starting in early summer of 2023, classes for Indigenous Classroom Assistant Diploma Program will be offered

Documentation Requirements
  • Vulnerable sector criminal reference check
Admission Requirements
  • Ontario High School Diploma with Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U) or Mature Student Test (19 years +)
  • Candidates without Grade 12 can be admitted if they are 21 years or older and have been out of school for two years or more.
  • Complete up-to-date immunizations

Part I
  • EDUC 1023 – Introduction to Literacy Strategies – 30 hours
  • EDUC 1034 – Introduction to Canadian Indigenous Studies – 30 hours
  • EDUC 1043 – Child Development – 30 hours
  • EDUC 1063 – Information Technology in Classrooms – 30 hours
  • EDUC 1124 – Introduction to Numeracy Strategies – 30 hours
  • EDUC 2012 – Working with Indigenous Children with Special Needs 1 – 30 hours
Total Hours – 180 hours.
 
Practicum I
  • EDUC 1010 – ICADP Practicum I – 60 hours

  • EDUC 2033 – Healthy Active Living Strategies for Indigenous Children- 30 hours
  • EDUC 2034 – Indigenous Children’s Health and Wellbeing – 30 hours
  • EDUC 2043 – Language Arts Strategies – 30 hours
  • EDUC 2124 – Numeracy Strategies II – 30 hours
  • EDUC 3012 – Working with Indigenous Children with Special Needs II – 30 hours
