Program Overview

Humber’s Wellness Coaching graduate certificate program prepares you to work in the field of health and wellness coaching. The program's online delivery is uniquely designed with the working student in mind. Throughout the program you will gain knowledge and skills for promoting health and wellness and preventing or managing disease. You will also learn to establish effective coaching relationships; support sustainable behaviour change through practices such as motivational interviewing and mindfulness; manage health and wellness programs; and improve quality of life for people with chronic conditions. You will empower individuals and groups to self-advocate, as they set and achieve healthy behaviour change goals. You will engage with clients in experiential learning opportunities within Humber’s innovative Centre for Healthy Living and also in field placements within a variety of organizational settings.
The Wellness Coaching programs offers several exciting certifications and opportunities for students. As part of the program you will receive Mental Health First Aid Certification. You will also receive the WellCoaches Core Training program as part of your coursework. Upon completing that training you will be eligible to pursue further certifications from WellCoaches, The National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching, and the International Coaching Federation. Furthermore, our program has been approved by the Canadian Health Coach Alliance which will allow you to use the “Registered Health Coach” title with proof of graduation.
 
Program Delivery: Courses are scheduled over two 14-week semesters and offer a blend of self-directed online modules and synchronous remote classes that take place in the evenings. Placement occurs in Semester 2 and offers both in-person and virtual options.
 
Admission Requirements
 
Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.
Admission selection is based on the following three requirements:
1. Academic
 
To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:
  • A bachelor’s degree, advanced diploma or diploma
2. English Language Proficiency
 
All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.
 
3. International Credit Evaluation

Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.
 
This program is not available to international applicants.

Centre for Innovation in Health & Wellness

Incorporated into the services offered by the Centre for Innovation in Health & Wellness, students will have the opportunity to engage in wellness coaching sessions with clients. These sessions will provide students with the experience to build their coaching skills.
 
Learning Outcomes:
1. Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
2. Develop wellness programs for individuals, families, communities, workplaces and populations based on critical appraisal of health and wellness information from relevant sources.
3. Examine and assess the specific factors which determine health and wellness including the social, cultural and economic environment, the physical environment, and individual characteristics and behaviours in order to inform decision-making.
4. Apply appropriate coaching techniques in order to develop specific proactive health and wellness behaviour change interventions relevant to individual conditions, preferences, goals and stage in the life cycle.
5. Establish effective wellness coaching relationships and leadership in a variety of outpatient, workplace, family and community settings, based on current and emerging theoretical perspectives.
6. Design, implement and evaluate programs and strategies for sustainable behavioural change informed by thorough analysis of relevant determinants of health and wellness.
7. Coach clients towards improved nutritional decision making and self-efficacy as part of a comprehensive wellness program to optimize client outcomes.
8. Apply practical strategies for establishing effective wellness coaching relationships and leadership in a variety of outpatient, workplace, family and community settings, based on current and emerging theoretical perspectives.
9. Develop, communicate and promote the business case for wellness programming in order to garner appropriate supports.
10. Build coaching relationships with individuals, families and groups in order to effect empowerment and positive behaviour . change to help individuals and groups benefit from appropriate health and wellness supports.
11. Practice within the scope of professional competence, legal, ethical and safety parameters, due diligence, and accepted wellness coaching practices.
12. Formulate on-going professional development strategies in order to keep practices current and relevant, to further the aims of clients and to contribute to on-going evolution of the field of wellness coaching.

Professional Accreditations & Recognition

Canadian Health Coach Alliance
 
The program is recognized by Canadian Health Coach Alliance (HCA) as an approved education provider meeting the curriculum requirements for the appropriate corresponding designation(s) in relation to their program offerings. Graduates may apply to become members with the Health Coach Alliance and qualify for the Entry Level RHC Designation.
 
Work Placement
A core aspect of the program is a work placement in which students apply for a placement opportunity where they can gain valuable work experience to support their personal and professional growth. Students can apply to a number of placement sites secured by the Placement Coordinator or seek out their own opportunities including completing the placement within their current employment setting. Students are exposed to inter-professional learning, planning and leadership, coaching practice, collegiality, and collaboration. This work placement consists of 210 hours.
