Description
This introductory course focuses on the roles and impacts of unions on work and broader society. The course examines the theoretical and applied dynamics of labour relations in Canada. Topics covered include the historical development and current structure of unions, legal and economic factors that shape labour-management relations, negotiations, and dispute resolution, and the impact of unions on management practices and employment relations.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, successful learners should be able to:
- Describe the legal framework governing union certification procedures and union-management relations in Canada.
- Assess the various management strategies related to unionized workplaces.
- Discuss the role of the collective agreement in unionized workplaces and interpret the application of contract language.
- Analyze unions and their impacts on employees and firms in Canada.
- Analyze and communicate employment relations and workplace issues.
- Apply labour relations theories to resolve conflicts and address problems.
