Reframing Art History
Description
The course explores the decorative arts, painting, architecture, sculpture, and performance cultures of African, Oceanic, and Pre-Columbian societies from pre-contact through the 19th century. Students examine the collection and exhibition of studied artworks within the context of seafaring, the global slave trade, and colonial expansion, as well as consider the arts institutions and artists movements that resulted.
In addition we will look at art from the following periods: prehistoric, ancient Egyptian, ancient Greek, early Islamic, Medieval, Baroque, Renaissance, Neoclassic and Romantic. Students have the option of essay, or creative work for their Mid Term and Final assignments.
