Technological Design Grades 9/10

Description

The Technological Design Basic ABQ will use an activity-based, project-driven approach to help you acquire new technical skills, create project resources, design curriculum documents, and develop the assessment and evaluation tools you will need to teach Grade 9 and10 Technological Design courses in your school. Teaching Technological Education is a lot different than teaching other subjects. Technology teachers encounter many variables in the classroom and shop that differ from the regular classroom. For example, we deal with a multitude of tools and equipment, which can present safety issues unlike those of other classes. Safety issues arise as soon as students walk into the shop, and therefore our approach to classroom management is critical. One of the major benefits of being a technology teacher is that students want to be here. Students typically comment, "This is my favourite class", "I get to work with my hands", or "I get to build projects." What does this tell us about the curriculum we deliver? The curriculum should be hands-on, enjoyable, project-driven, and meet the Ministry expectations for Technological Education. We need to design our curriculum to meet all these criteria and more. For the teacher, the curriculum has to be fluid, and therefore the curricular units, activities, and lessons have to be sequential. Our assessment and evaluations should be honest and authentic for learning. In addition, we need to address students' literacy and numeracy skills even though we are not Math or English teachers. The objective of these modules is to help you to design a curriculum to meet both students' and teachers' needs. The curriculum has to be designed around the tools and resources available in each classroom and shop. A good curriculum will be the best tool you have in your shop or classroom. The aim of all ABQ Technological Studies programs is to prepare teachers to teach broad-based technology (BBT) courses in secondary schools.
