Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing
Description
This course will explore the meaning of mental health and mental illness through the perspectives of the individual, family and community in a socio-cultural context. Students will examine the evolution of mental illness as influenced by social, economic, political and legal factors. Students will develop an understanding of the role that stigma plays in mental illness and its impact on the client, family, and society. The focus will include major mental health disorders, personality disorders, dual diagnoses, concurrent disorders, comprehensive and focused mental health assessments, crisis intervention and prevention, therapeutic communication techniques/skills, and the promotion of positive mental health outcomes. This course will expand students' knowledge about the unique role that nurses fulfill in a variety of mental health settings (Prerequisite: 63-278.) (Corequisites: Registration in all year 3 fall semester courses) (3 lecture hours a week.)
Section Offered as Partial Distance Education
"This course section will be offered as a hybrid model. Students have the option to attend weekly classes in person on campus or live online via Blackboard Collaborate, as per the class schedule. Most weeks, the instructor will present simultaneously in class and through Collaborate to students who are off-campus.
The off-campus (online) students will be able to participate in the live classes and ask questions through the Collaborate interface. Depending on the class activity/content, there may be some weeks where students will be required to attend class in person on campus, rather than online. The instructor will provide this information at the start of the course. All tests, quizzes, mid-term and final exams must be written in person at UWindsor campus unless otherwise specified by the instructor."
