Introduction to Substance Abuse
Description
This course provides an introduction to the history of substance use and abuse and the social context in which it exists. The course outlines various theories of substance use. In addition, this course explores cultural and societal influences that impact use and abuse, an overview of the most prevalent drugs of abuse, the common myths surrounding substance abuse, and current drug policy in Canada. This course also presents an overview of substance abuse screening and assessment, treatment settings and approaches, and an introduction to the nature of co-occurring mental health and substance use problems. Competencies related to interprofessional collaboration (collaborative practice) are introduced, and an opportunity to participate in an experiential field immersion activity is included. Students will have an opportunity to complete additional certification in Mental Health First Aid.
