Industrial Relations
Description
This course provides a broad introduction to Industrial Relations in Canada, surveying a number of key subject areas. Beginning with the study of the social, economic, and political context in which contemporary unions function, it then examines unions both as institutions and complex political organizations. Employer strategies for responding to unionism are examined and their theoretical underpinnings assessed. The role of the state is analyzed with particular emphasis on the implications for public policy and adjudication. The main areas of formal union-management interaction, the establishment of bargaining rights, negotiation of collective agreements, and resolution of grievances are explored in detail. Key differences between the public sector and private sector are identified and their significance assessed. The effectiveness of the formal dispute resolution mechanisms that exist is evaluated. The course concludes with an assessment of the impact of unionism and collective bargaining on Canadian economic, social and political life as well as the prospects for the future.
