Indigenous Languages in the Modern Context
Description
This course explores the sociology of Indigenous languages from the perspectives of language learning, language expression, and language retention in our contemporary context. The course begins by examining the history of Indigenous languages learning and expression in the pre-colonial context. The course then explores the historical impacts of colonization on Indigenous languages with respect to language learning, expression, retention and fluency. Students learn about the current state of Indigenous languages learning, expression, retention, and fluency in our contemporary content. The role that the revitalization of Indigenous languages plays in the over-all project of Indigenous decolonization is explored. Students will research varied Indigenous language acquisition programs employed in today's context.
