Health, Safety and Nutrition

Description

This course provides the foundation for promoting health in early childhood environments. HA philosophy of health promotion is used as a basis for program policies and good practice that support health for children, families, educators, and staff in early childhood settings. Course content focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to create effective practice that promotes and supports children's well-being and safety in the learning environment including nutrition and physical, mental, and emotional health. This course emphasizes the primary rights and responsibilities of parents/guardians and the necessity of creating respectful partnerships with families and colleagues to create safe, healthy and welcoming environments that promotes a sense of belonging, well-being and inclusion for all. Attention is given to a health promotion philosophy and to health issues in a cross-cultural context, as well as the scope and limitations of the educator's role in health, safety, and nutrition. Introduction to relevant health and safety legislation and guidelines is provided. The health and safety of educators is an important concern for employers as well as the educators. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the necessity of knowing how to maximize health practices and keep healthy in the workplace. Promotion of health is important for both families and for those working in the early childhood environments. Content on occupational health and safety is provided so that educators learn what they may do towards their own physical health and well-being for working.
