Geriatric Mental Health

Description

In this course, students examine a variety of mental health disorders that are common among older adults. Students explore aging using a continuum model of health and illness and an integrated bio-psycho-social approach. Mental health challenges such as cognitive decline and dementia, mood and anxiety disorders, substance use and other addictive disorders are explored in the context of the other health, psychological and social challenges that often come with aging. Working effectively with this population requires specific clinical competencies in therapeutic engagement, assessment and intervention in order to work collaboratively with clients, family members, and other healthcare/social service professionals.
