Foundations of Public Health

Description

Overview of the conceptual, theoretical, practical, and professional foundations of public health. The course will help students build an understanding of the historical origins and achievements of public health practitioners and establish an appreciation of the core values that underpin, and the core functions that make up, public health. Examination and analysis of current approaches to prevent, control, and manage the major causes of illness and disease worldwide. The course also serves as an introduction to the MPH program. As such, it is required to be taken in the first term of the MPH program. Typical terms may not reflect online offerings.
 
Special Notes    
 
1) This course is delivered in a 2-week block at the beginning of the MPH program sequence, on the UW main campus.
2) This course must be successfully completed by MPH students before proceeding to other courses in the MPH program sequence.
3) Graded on a credit/non-credit basis.
4) This course fulfills one of the MPH core requirements.
