Deviance & Crime in Sport
Description
This course examines criminal and deviant behaviour and contemporary issues of justice in the world of sport, highlighting the cultural contradictions that emerge in how sport upholds dominant social structures, norms, and values, but also how harmful or deviant acts that occur in sport may be ritually tolerated or embraced. This course is intended to encourage students to think critically about sports, and its relation to deviance and crime in contemporary society. Topics may include: doping, fighting, violence, gambling, hazing, hooliganism, sexual abuse and harassment, gender discrimination, racism, fraud and bribery.
