Assessing Parenting Capacity

Description

This course is designed to assist students in understanding the clinical and legal context of how parenting capacity assessments are applied in child welfare and clinical forensic settings. In this course, students will consider and critically evaluate Steinhauer's model of parenting capacity assessment along with other frameworks and models of parenting assessment. These concepts will be related to best practices in case planning, assessment and decision-making. Students will also have the opportunity to critique some parenting capacity assessments, apply various concepts to case studies and debate the strengths and limitations of various models of parenting capacity assessments as they relate to real-life situations. Consideration will be given to case note preparation and report writing for court testimony. Issues of culture and ethnicity, in relation to parenting assessments and decision-making, will also be examined.
